Cyber Privacy and Safety

Digital Meetings, Privacy, Cyber Safety and WebEx

  • Before taking, sharing, or recording photos/videos of students:

    • Announce you will begin the video function.

    • Review the opt out list provided to you by your site Principal.

    • If students are on “opt out” make sure they have turned off their video or you can, as the Webex host, turn off the video feature for those specific students.

    • Encourage parents to have their student attend the meetings in a designated space that contains a background that they do not mind the teacher seeing.

  • Students are not allowed to record audio or video of any meetings. Though this is difficult to enforce. If you are aware of students recording you without your permission, contact your Principal.

  • It is highly beneficial for students if you record your meetings and make them available to students, since some students will not be able to access the meeting in real time due to family responsibilities, bandwidth issues, etc.

  • Make sure you provide your students/parents with written norms and expectations for your class to maintain appropriate behavior.

  • If you are doing a pre-recorded video or live video, make sure your visible area/background is appropriate and does not contain things you don't want students/parents to see.

  • Students will log into WebEx meetings using information sent by the teacher/meeting host. If there is anyone in the meeting that you don't know; try to find out who they are and/or expel (WebEx function) them from the meeting.

Remember you are still a mandated reporter:

  • You may need to report what you see and/or hear online to CPS.

  • If you see and/or hear anything concerning, do not hesitate to reach out to your principal, counselor, or the district Managers of Prevention and Wellness (Cara Messmore/Jenn Mullin).

The Digital Equivalent

While we are working digitally, you are still operating just as if you were in the classroom. Your online classes and meetings should meet the same standard for professionalism in the digital space. This same philosophy also applies to how you should discipline students, meet with students, or perform any other professional task.

We understand that in some cases one-on-one meetings may be necessary depending on your roll and/or the activity. Role specific guidance regarding meetings will be coming soon.

Expectations for Students and Staff

The District and the State of California have several important standards, which are the same standards that apply to distance teaching as they would if you were teaching at your sites. We know that you demonstrate great professionalism in your in-person teaching, and we know that you will during online teaching. They are listed below for your review.
